This experience in Ladakh was full of surprises and new impression.
I was surprise by the kindness of people I met and worked with. I was surprise by their acceptence of me, a stranger, a foreigner coming to their country and their home to work with their children.
Kargil where I spend 3 wonderful months (May – July) was full of new impression and challenges. The muslim culture, the mountains and of course the work with the locals. Being the only foreigner for 1 month, I had to find my way: with a lot of patience and sometimes frustration, but with a lot of joy.
One big challenge for me was the communication: how to be understood by my co-workers and the patients? I think it’s first in Kargil that I fully understood the meaning of it and experience all this aspects.
But the biggest challenge was the children. How can we help them? Make their lives easier? Make them happy? The work with disabled children is still very new for me and somehow especially for that reason the work with the team was so nice. We could learn from each other, me from the practical part and them from my theoretical knowledge. I hope I can say that through this cooperation we did something good for the children.
I’m more than thankful for the beautiful moments I had here and all the experience I could get. I’m also thankful for the wonderful friends I got to know and hope I can come back soon again.
